Ok, installed the new starter last week, hit the button, SAME PROBLEM!!!!!!! Starter shaft gear just spins and does not engage. So after almost hanging myself haha I went to my buddies, put the bike on the lift and let him take s look at it. After looking at the issue from several different angles i think we, or I mean he haha, figured it out. On the ultima primary there is a starter gear cover that has a bushing in it. This bushing holds the end of the starter Jack shaft. This bushing is seriously worn and egg shaped. With this bushing so worn the starter gear is not engaging the motor pulley. I stopped by a local Harley shop and they agree with this diagnosis. So I figure great, order a new cover and done. I have been googling eBay and every other website on the net and I cannot find this part anywhere. The starter gear cover for an ultima 3.35" drag race style open primary. I found the bolts for it haha, but no cover. If anybody can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
This is the part. Not sure if you can see it in the pic but the bushing is shot!!! If you look close you can see how egg shaped it is, very thick wall up top and thin on the opposite side. It's not holding the shaft straight and gears aren't catching. This must also explain why it got worse with time, as it wore out. Anyway, what a pain!!!
I was thinking just find a replacement bushing for 5 bucks also. Anybody suggest anything. Are there "bushing shops" haha. If I take them the cover and the shaft they would have the inside and outside dimensions. I don't know how to pull the old bushing either. I figure just press the new one in with a vise or mallet and peice of wood.
Thanx for the link. If nobody chimes up with a link to the cover for sale somewhere I will go with getting a bushing. There is s custom Harley shop a few towns over, gonna try them tomorrow. Keeping fingers crossed👍👍
Ok, sick of talking about this so I am gonna make a long story short. I went to Custom Harley shop today looking for that bushing. Guy said he didn't think they was the problem and told me to bring bike in and he would figure it out for one hour labor. Called me in an hour, bike is all set. Spring behind jack shaft wore and not pushing Jack shaft out far enough. Put a slightly longer jack shaft on starter, problem solved. Starter engages every time and bike starts every time, all done. $140 with the transmission oil changed. :icon _clapclap:
