Risky? Why's that? I've had the HD bolt grip gadget thing on my BO for years. Works great. Mine is a Techmount/HD hybrid. I mixed the parts from two different kits together.
Just figured the wind could be strong enough to make it fall out. I've never had one so can't speak for it's effectiveness.

Yeah, I get what you mean. I thought the same thing at first I guess
Don't sweat it though - the phone's not gonna go anywhere
Just don't leave it on the bike when you get where you're going
+1 using it for years no issues. My HD shield has 4 very capable solid chrome clamps so easily removable for riding with or without. I rode without but love using it for the lack of constant wind and bugs hitting me.
About to put some z-bars on my bike but just browsing through the H-D site looking at the new 114 Breakout makes me think I should look into trading before doing such a mod. Decisions, decisions.

I was in the same boat when the M8 bikes came out. One look at the M8 Breakout is all it took for me. The M8 engine and the new Softail frame may be more advanced, but the "old" bikes look better ... to me. The big hangup for me is the M8's radiator between the down tubes....no dice H-D

I'm no engineer but where else could you put the radiator?
You're right though, the previous model does look better. I just like the liquid cooled concept and the fact it's a 114 from a 103.
One minor issue I have with my bike is the turn radius. It seems like I'm frequently scraping pegs. Anyone know if an engine guard would reduce the turn radius even more?

The front suspension is very soft. and forward weight transfer or compression into a turn makes the bike lose a couple of inches in clearance up front. By getting rid of that initial soggy section in the forks, the bike will maintain it's height better and you'll be scraping much less. And, as another benefit, your braking will be immensely improved by preventing weight from transferring forward off the wide rear tire in panic stop situations. Some believe that a wider tire increases stopping distance grip but that is not correct, because contact pressure with road is reduced by being spread over a wider surface area. Need to keep weight on that fat rear tire to keep it hooked up.
Adding weight of an engine guard would reduce clearance so I would say yes, it will affect it. the above will take care of it- just be sure to calculate the appropriate all-up weight when selecting fork springs, or, just use a slightly longer pre-load spacer on top of the springs in the fork tubes. i prefer the correct spring weight because a longer preload spacer makes for less overall travel and can make the ride a bit stiffer.
