I just picked up another tank and it has a little rust on the inside - how can you remove it without messing up the paint? Should I worry about a little rust?
Yea definitely want to strip, clean, and reseal that. A little bit of rust can turn into a lot and then your tracking rust particles through the fuel lines, into your carb (or fuel rail if you're rocking an EFI Sporty). The rust can damage all of these parts, but it will destroy cylinder walls, piston rings, pistons, well just about everything. It may be a 6 day PITA that may run ya $50-$75, but that's far better compared to rebuilding a motor and losing weeks of riding time. I say 6 day because they recommend at least 5 days after sealing the tank to fill it up. 2 days to do the process and at bare minimum 4 days for it to cure.
I'm fixing to redo my tank. The tank repair the last feller did has not taken too good. Floaties, rust, lots of bare spots. Thinking I am just going to strip it all out and start over. That last video was great, but on a funny note, it reminded me of this! I still laugh...
