At least on my ride, the coating is dirt.

I have pulled a couple of engines though,. alone , expect a broken ? anywhere you care to guess.

With a friend/pal you may make it to the garge floor in one piece.

I finally learned to take the heads/cylinders off first.

Harley Sells Spray can engine paint. I've sprayed a few things on my bike. prep is the key to it looking good and lasting.

Ill look into that. I've just been getting more and more annoyed with the fact that they didnt put the black coated engine in our Nightsters. I either want to drop mine this winter and have it redone in black or find a wrecked bike and swap engines. How's that for a waste of money, hahahaha. [sm=bling.gif]

Shouldnt be too hard to get someone to powdercoat the engine black for you might cost a few $$$ but much cheaper than a new motor

HD uses a silver sparkle or cast textured black powder coating on thier engines/trannies. To change the silver to black powder coating would require that you completely disassemble the engine and take your parts to a powder coater that knows what to mask!!!! Some schucks out there don't have a clue and powder coat areas that should NEVER be coated causing losts of problems. The old powder coating will have to be stripped, all parts degreased, blasted/pre-treated, masked and powder coated. We do it all the time.

If that's the route you want to take, I'd strongly reccommend you do some homework first and find out how knowledgeable your local powder coater is. It's also a good idea to get some references from your powder coater to see how satisfied their customers are/were. Too much of an investment to just cross your fingers and hope for the best!

Powder coater is absolutly correct on his above post. That stuff is rock hard when cured. If in the wrong places, it will cause problems in re-fitting parts, etc. A picture/pictures of what you want done may be of some help to the power coater I imagine.

Having been a automotive painter myselfI can attest to prep being everything. At one time I also did a lot of bikes, nothing too fancy, but very high quality work. Anyway, way back when Arlen Ness was a up and coming painter he bought some usedCop bikes at a auction and Custom Chopper did a article on how he refurbished themfor cheap. As I recall he taped of the frame and pressure steam cleaned the motor and trans. After that he taped off parts he didn't want covered and shot the rest with quality rattle can wrinkle black. The result was nothing short of amazing, and I know from personal experience it can hold up very well. The trick is to ignore the can and shoot it on a cool motor, you get a nicer wrinkle and it sticks better, but again, anyone going this route, prep is everything.

I'm looking at a few options right now. I'm just frustrated with HD as to why the hell they wouldnt put the black motor in the Nightster to begin with. [:@]

I've got all winter to play with it so we'll see what happens, haha. I assume its gonna come out of hibernation looking a bit different and most likely with some new internals. I appreciate everyones help though. [sm=thanx.gif]
