Default Scratched Paint

My rear fender has its share of scratches, from trips where I strap stuff to my bike. Someone told me about black rubbing compound. Is this what I need ? Is there a wax thats better than others? Besides getting it painted, what are my options?

Just any light duty polishing compound for clear coat or mequires scratch-x works fine followed by wax. Black is the worst for showing scratches.

Rubbing compound by the way is not a good choice as it cuts pretty good and you risk going through the clear coat.

If these are simply fine scratches you can use water and some #2000 sand paper. After you have finished the affected area you can buff it out using a quality polish and it will look good as new. This is called color sanding and it won't hurt a thing as the Harley clear coat is thick and tough. I had to do this with my front fender last year after it was hit by a small rock that came off an 18 wheeler.

What I did was take the factory sideplates and traced them with a plasma cutter. Took some round stock and made some bends. Then I mounted the plates I had just cut and welded the round stock to the plates right there on the bike. Well tacked it then took it off and welded it up. After it was welded , I cut the part of the sideplates that I din't want. It wasn't the same angle that I wanted. I wanted it to be the same as the roundstock. Grinded it all smooth and painted it and voila. Couple of hours work. I dont think its much to lean on but its practical. Actually that picture is from last summer. Take a look at my picture album and there are some more recent pictures.
