My buddies 'o5 883L is every once and a while backfiring through the carb when you jab the throttle at idle. About twice a ride I guess, not much. Is this about normal? I'm just wondering if there's anything wrong with an occasional "pop" on newer bikes.
pull the plugs and check for a black ring on the plug...if it's there check the intake seals
also, does it diesel once ina while when the bike is shut off?if it does then check to see if the choke is hanging open a little or check to see if the cam sensor is going south...it may look like it's melting
I have an '06 1200C and had the same problem. The bikes come from the factory on the lean side, so they can get a higher MPG ratio for the GOV, I had to richen up both the idle mixture and the high end mixture. I went up one jet size for each and the problem went away.
Hope this helps.
yeah, he's got straight drag pipes on it, and the SE air cleaner, all done by the previous owner, probably worth pulling the carb bowl and finding out what jets are in it. I checked the spark plugs, everything was good there.
You for sure need to re-jet.I did mine, and it took about a half-hour.I had to do it twice to get the right jets tuned in,but it's pretty easy.I have Straightshots and the Sceamin Eagle air intake.I am running 45/180 jets

Yeppers. and "Read" the articles in the links that sportypig posted. Rejetting does not equal adjusting the mixture Mixture (rich/lean) is a separate issue and is addressed in the articles. BTW my 99 has 48/185 jets. PO changed them with the cam change and se ac. I changed the pipes and still had the problem. Did the necessary work to access mixture, adjusted it and the spitting and popping quit There are no less than 4 threads running right now about this same issue.
