Hey group my wife just bought her a 04 Sporster 1200 as her 1st bike. She got a good deal on it with only 12,000 miles on it. I was at work so i didnt have the chance to check the bike out before hand. It's a great looking bike but after i rode it for the 1st time there was 2 things that for sure need to be fixed. 1st it bikefires and misses i think ( A loud Popping noise). So i think for sure a tune up. 2nd and this worries me is when you give it gas it stays in that position. Let me explain that a little better . How ever far you move your right hand down and give it some gas the throttle stays in that position without returning to the normal position. I own a road king and dont know anything about sporsters but guys help me out am i looking at a boatload to fix this. Tune up and throttle replacement and anybody got a service manual for sale?
How long was the bike sitting? Sounds like there's bad fuel & gummed carb...shouldn't be hard/spendy fix. Clean out the carb, check/fix throttle cable & drain/fill tank.
I agree with Iceman. I remember having the problem of the throttle not returning on an old Gold Wing I had bought that had been sitting for several years. It had two throttle cables, one to pull open, the other to pull shut. Anyway after I oiled the cables well, it would spring back to idle.
Yes, do a tune up & run a few tanks of fresh fuel through it to see if that helps with the backfiring/coughing.....Otherwise, you could simply have an gasket gone bad letting excess air in some where. As for the throttle not returning.....Loosen the throttle lock, (star wheel on the bottom side of the throttle), and it should snap back.
Try some Seafoam in the gas first. Stuff works wonders. Lube the cables and check the other things mentioned. Should get her back to like new. Spray some brake cleaner around the intake seals. If the idle changes, you have an intake leak. I burnt my cylinders and pistons when mine leaked.
Sounds like the star whell needs backed off and i would put a bit of Seafoam in the tank and change out the pugs and see how that goes. it's a cheap start and it's only going to do it good even if it does ntoe fix the issue.
