I messed up and jumped my bike its a 2004 sportster 883 custum. It only has 800 miles on it, it has been in storage and i tried jummping it and blew the 15 amp battery fuse. Now when i put in a new fuse with the bike off it blows instantly. I removed tank and unplugged all electrical plugs, put in a new fuse and started plugging back in. as soon as i plug in speedo, the fuse blows. without speedo hooked up bike starts runs great, blinkers work, everything works. I think speedo is fried but dealership says it could be something else messed up, any ideas? speedo is $300 no returns so i want to make sure. thanks

Sounds like there is a short caused by your speedo. I'd take apart the speedo, if you can, and examine the insides.
Do you have the service manual? I would also ohm out the wires from the speedo back to the fuse block. Just to make sure you didn't melt some wires or something.
no manual yet i am getting one. just got bike and wanted to see what i could test. how would i do the ohm test just check each wire in speedo harness to fuse box? sorry electric not my strong suit. i have a volt meter that test ohms just never done it. also speedo is sealed unit so i cant take it apart. thanks

There should be a plug that goes into the speedo. You really need the manual to know what wires you are testing. But yes, using the ohm setting on the volt meter you can test the wires out one at a time. Find someone to help that has an understanding on how to do this.
just ordered manual. i will try ohm test but could i have a short in wiring harness if bike runs fine with speedo unpluged at the guage? only blows fuse when i plug in speedo. thanks

I highly doubt it. If you have an ohm meter on you, try testing between wires within the speedo now. I be you'll get some "beeps" from your ohm meter on wires that shouldn't "beep"
Hey all - This exact circumstance happened to me. "Engine Start Setting" on battery charger will short out the speedo often times. This will cause the battery fuse to blow and no lights on speedo either will result. Spent hours checking all the wires, but no shorts When I disconnected the speedo, doing that allowed my 2004 sportster start, without blowing fuses. With the speedo connected, all I got was a headlight, but would not turn over due the battery fuse immediatly blowing. Got a new speedo and all is now working. The speedo itself was shorted out. That happens often if you charge battery on engine start by mistake. If you ever need a jumpstart its ok to use a car with jumper cables, BUT DONT START THE CAR thats giving you the jump, it should not be running. If the car is running you probably will short something out. Cheers! -Glennyboy
