Default SE Clutch Spring Installation

I've looked around the forum(s) for some experience with installing the heavier SE clutch spring. I find lots of conversations about the results but not a lot about the actual install.

Mine is on an 06 FLHR, it will come out through the derby cover and with a little persuasion went back in. I found that a couple of crescent wrenches made good "levers" to warp the spring so it would slip back into the hole. Tried it on the old spring first, didn't damage or mar it. First idea was to use channel locks but didn't want to goon it up with jaw marks. The smooth jaws of the crescent wrenches worked like a champ.

So got it back in and in position but can't seem to get it to seat back into its groove in the clutch. Dealership is closed tomorrow or I'd just go get a new primary gasket, bottle of primary fluid and call it good. Anyone have any ideas? I'm tempted to put the retention ring on and work the bolts down and see if it pops in but I don't want to screw up the groove on the clutch basket.

If your careful removing the primary, the gasket can be reused. Done it myself. Just wipe it down good and clean it up before reinstalling. I'm quite positive in not the only one to reuse it.

I'll probably give it a shot tomorrow. Nothing to loose except a little fluid, right? LoL

easier to remove the primary cover- but FIRST- disconnect the battery.

you approach is like trying to build a sandwich, from outside the kitchen window

Nice analogy...decided to try it as described since several forum members said it could be done, and the parts guy at hd. I'm sure it can and I'm probably just being too gentle with it. I'll attack again tomorrow and just pull the primary. I can say I tried it the other way though , lol...

I will add to my previous post, it's nice to have a spare gasket on hand just in case though. At least that way you don't get caught with your pants down.

So for anyone searching this for info on installing the SE clutch spring, here's the resolution:
Just get a new derby cover gasket and primary gasket, bottle of fluid and the spring. You'll be happier, curse less and be done in less time. Clean it up good before you disassemble, remove carefully and you might save the gasket, you're going to spill more fluid than you think, bring kitty litter, clean wipe, torque to specs and reassemble IAW the Service Manual. Much easier, much faster, much less painful.
Yes, I have an $18000+ grip trainer now that hooks up and scares the SH!7 out of me!! I luv it!!

GO HAWKS!!

I like the way it makes mine hook up too. The clutch is harder to pull for sure but I was use to it within the first 15mins.
