...But it's my son's first 'big' Harley (he owns an 2006 883R):
'old guy' bike bought from original owner. 1999 FLHT Electraglide Standard. Carb'd model. 47,xxx miles. New battery. Fresh oil. 2000 miles on rubber. Always dealer serviced with records. No engine mods.
I told him about the cam chain tensioners. Anything else with these first year twinkies?

White walls gotta go.....
definitely cam chain tensioners your about 12000 miles over due keep an eye on the rear exhaust pipe they crack easy at the y just behind the head caused from excessive movement "front motor mount" same goes for the rear muffler mount rubbers.
and the biggest problem is no dam drain plugs in the bags for the melted ice

Yep. He's already looking at an S&S upgrade.

the 99 had a few issues...pinion bearing for bikes built ( i think) may~oct 1998...american iron's Donny peterson kept a pretty good scorecard for the new TC .
google will reveal most.
there was recall for the tip over sensor bracket.
ignition switch, main breaker.
good thing he got a carb
y pipe crack can also be caused by owner whacking away trying to change mufflers. easy to pull it off and weld it
in terms of power, the heads are very restrictive to flow...the TC88 made about the same 55 HP as the 80" Evo....
the 2000 Screaming Eagle catalog proudly offered SE Heads for $600.

When you check the tensioner pads make sure the outer cam bearing on the rear cam is a roller and not a ball....only affects first two years of production but goes bang very easily.
