Had a knocking noise for a month. looked at everything. only did it at certain rpm,s then i just happen to notice the right side lower vent rattling and saw that it was banging against the bottom of the lower itself. Grabbed it with my hand and noise stopped. left side is rock solid but right side is loose. tightened up the nut inside the glove compartment but no change. any solutions? anybody ever just discard those vents. dont know if they really do alot anyhow.

I had same issue with my the vented lowers on my 09 flhtcu with the vents rattling and aking all sorts of noise are various engine rpm and road speeds.
Tried tightening them too and NG,i ended up removing the the sliding vents from the lowers to get rid of the racket they were making.
But i still have have a couple more buzz & or rumbling type noise issues to track down in the faring that happen at certain engine rpm that not only seem to come from inside faring but also radiate thru the bars at times too.
Already tied down everything i could inside the the faring and checked headlight- mount ring too, maybe its a cracked / broken faring mount along with a possible bad front engine mount and or wheel bearing causing mult issues at same time in front end.
But its annoying as heck and no i don't want to install louder pipes / mufflers to cancel out the noises!!!/LOL!!!
yeah. i was thinking about removing the sliding vents. i dont think they block a whole lot of cold air when its colder anyway. they are kind of cheap. im guessing they upgraded these on 14 and 15 models
It seems like it's always the right one that goes to pot. I think it's because riders are more likely to open the right one because of the engine heat. It's pretty easy to hit the vent when it's open during braking.
There is a big difference in rider comfort when you open the right vent in the summer. I would think that in the winter with the vent closed, it would block wind just as effectively.
2009 UC ,What it is is the top of the lower vent is held on by the plastic flap the flap brakes and so does a small retaining piece. I have the same issue. I noticed it on an incline with the rear break applied looked at the vent and was moving and slapping like no tomorrow. It is covered under warranty. When I go do by next oil change I will get a new one.
Was driving me crazy thought it was the primary for the longest time had that checked etc...anyhow check it again the right side the problem the left side solid!

yup. my right side is flopping around. pretty sad piece of garbage on harleys part. my warranty just expired a month ago. ill remove it before i pay and have it break again
Same thing on my 2013 Road Glide Ultra, been thinking of applying some thin rubber gasket material or perhaps some mild sanding on the lowers to clear the shield piece. Those lowers do a good job when it's 40 degrees out there.
