Use only the o-ring regardless of what the H-D idiots wrote in the shop manual.
Using thread sealer only pushes the o-ring out of it's groove causing the o-ring to tear.
Also, putting either thread dope or loctite on those threads is an exercise in futility because the oil on the threads will render both of them useless.
I did hydraulic work for over 30 years and H-D is the only entity stupid enough to recommend the use of thread dope on a drain plug.
My HD shop manual says "Apply Loctite Thread Sealant with Teflon 565 to threads". This is NOT a thread locker.
I've never used any kind of thread locker on my drain plugs and in over 300,000 miles between three different big twins never had one come loose.
