I never use tape on any type of plug that leads into an oil reservoir. If you aren't careful and get a wrap of tape on the end of the plug, you risk that piece tearing off inside the case while tightening the drain plug. But as long as you don't wrap the tape past the 1st thread, usually ok.

Nope no tape or sealant, New o ring most of the time.

Dealers use to never use it and now they do. The factory puts it on now. I use to use never use it but now I do. I don't want any bitching from the dealer or MOCO if something goes wrong while under warranty.

To the OP I never used it on a 99 Glide with 80,000 + miles with no issues.

Same for me, except for the o-ring. I'm still running what the MOCO put on the drain plug in 2005, 104,000 miles ago.
