wondering if shavings settled in the case + the off-white sealant + some oil maybe?

Don't sweat it.

Oil sump plug, torque it down to 120-144 in lb. I use a small amount of thread sealant on mine.

I'd go on the low end of that torque spec and make sure you have sealant on the plug.

You can buy these plugs with magnets in them also.
