Could I be destroying my engine...and not know it?
Someone passed a comment that has me thinking.
Hanging out with a few other riders, we were talking about mods. I explained how I had a dealer installed stage 1 SE pipes with high flow filter and stage 1 map. I then explained how the HD download caused excessive popping, and why I purchased a PCIII and changed the map to a PC map. The popping was still there, so I richened the low end (0% throttle), and that eliminated the decel popping.
Comment:
Only God knows how much damage you're really doing when you changed the map.
Let's just say that I added too much fuel in the low end......what damage COULD I be doing to my engine?.....if any.
RE: Could I be destroying my engine...and not know it?
Your not going to do any harm to your engine. The decell popping you have is caused by unburned gasses in the exhaust pipe re-iginiting. You cannot hurt an engine from too much fuel, you will only decrease horsepower if it is too much fuel. If you were to decrease the amount of fuel and increase the air, then you would be in a lean condition and that leads to burned valves. I have the PCIII on my 04 Ultra Classic and it has minor pops on decel and I just live with it. You can take your bike to a local shop that has a dyno and they can actually analyze your bike and install a map into your PCIII that will be custom taylored to your bikes parameter. The local shop in close to Memphis charges about 250 total for the dyno time and the calibration of the bike.
RE: Could I be destroying my engine...and not know it?
The download came from Harley and they're the same folks who set up the stock program so I fail to see how the changes could be destroying the engine. As far as being too rich at idle, as long as the bike is running well enough the only thing you will have to watch is your plugs...they may be prone to fouling with the extra fuel.

if it is that rich where you are talking washing the cylinder walls diluting the oil its not gonna run well at all, popping will be the least of your concerns. I wouldnt sweat it too much.

I enjoy a good popping now and then..scares the **** out of the old folks visiting in downtown DC.....especially on the side streets...if it's not my bike, then I know to roll on the throttle to get the hell out of there..most likely it's another shooting in DC!
