What's the difference between an 85 a 90 and a 150. I want to stuff the biggest one I can on the rear of my 08 ultra

you can go wider if you use spacers, a custom wheel and/or convert to chain drive.

The aftermarket has all kinds of "wide tire" kits

I think a bike with front & rear tires about the same size handles better though

That's kind of a vague question. The width is listed in millimeters. A higher number is wider (more millimeters of width).

A stock 08 isn't going to take a very wide tire because your rear wheel is only 3 inches wide. You missed it by a year. 2009 is 5 inch wide wheel.

You can fit a 160 on your stock rim but it isn't easy if you do them by hand like I do. There is no interference with the belt guard or anything else. The tire does not like that narrow a rim. A 150 fits easy and mounts much easier.

Example: 185/60-16

185 is the width in millimeters (divide by 25.4 to get inches - which, in this case, would be 185/25.4=7.28 inches)
60 is the aspect ratio. This is a percentage of the width and it tells you how tall the sidewall of the tire is. (185 x 60% = 111 millimeters [or 4.37 inches])
16 is the rim diameter.
