EZ Brake offers a spacer that is spring loaded and keeps tension on the shifter shaft, I'm assuming to prevent wear of the shifter shaft bushing. I originally used the cap style to cover the end of shifter shaft, but I wanted the toe shift in the out board position.
I took the heal shifter off my bike, and put the toe shifter all the way on, and marked the shaft. I then took the shaft out, and cut it with a lathe, and put it all back together, and that is how I like it.
yeah, it would work fine. but it does not give you the benefit of moving the toe shifter to the outside, heel shifter position.
a long time ago, someone on here had machined spacers that would allow the removal of the heel shifter and moving the toe shifter outboard. I've used it on 3 bikes now. if I ever sell this one, that's one of the things that I will take off and keep.
sure, this piece is definitely 'over engineered' and the same result can be done simpler, but I really like the fact that it does not look like I macgyvered anything.
I got one off that same guy but don't remember his info. Have had it since 09 and he was making them in black anodized and machined billit....Im very happy with mine
I know this has nothing to do with the OP's question, but after moving from a single-shifter Dyna to an RGU, I hated the heal shifter. 3000 miles later, I have found that I really like it. Just takes some getting used to.
This!
Several years ago when I moved from a softail to a touring bike, on my maiden voyage home I thought "this heel shifter thing has GOT to go". Well, several boatloads of miles later...there may be violence if someone tried to remove it. I have grown to really like it and now if I ride a friends single shifter bike it feels very strange.
I find no need for the heel shifter. Awkward trying to use it. I admit I bang the shifter some times downshifting. 95% of the time I drive the bike nice and the other 5% I drive it like I stole it.
Here's my spline shaft and the screw. The screw I bought with the new shaft was longer the one I posted. No play in the shaft now. The screw keeps the spline in place in the bevel area. If some one takes the shaft out and puts it back in and the screw and bevel not lined up would probably cause the damage above. I bought the bike with 2300 miles, 2014 RK. I sold my wide glide, my springer, but the wife wouldn't let me get anymore bikes til I sold them all. The last bike I sold was a 1942 WLC with side car. Hurt so bad, but she's the boss. I know who has it so I can ride when ever I want.. Looking for a 70's Triumph now.
Bought a 2020 RGS was surprised to see HD eliminated the heel shifter. I like it. All they did is put a longer rubber spacer on the shaft and mounted the shifter on the outside spline. The black shift levers are $51 from Harley plus a shift peg. The longer spacer is only about $2 from your Harley dealer. No need to fabricate something that is that cheap. I bought the shorter spacer and found a shift lever on EBay for $19 that has a peg. All is good
