Pull the outer primary cover. Follow the torque specs and you can reuse the gasket.

Default Missing Bolt

Yes, if you have a small magnet on a stick, you can fish for it. You can also remove the drain plug and check the magnet and fish through there. If all else fails, remove the outer primary.
Are you sure it didn't bounce away from the work site ?

Yup. pull the cover and find that little bugger. Don't just think that it may have rolled away cause it didn't. Sucks.

Glad you found it but going forward when working on bike get you a couple of the magnet dishes intended for such use, keeping bolts and such from hiding where you will least likely or never find them.

I'll bet that Harbor Freight has all sorts of magnetic goodies that would help you in just such a situation. That bought experience is the best kind. Just glad you didn't have to take the post-grad course...

I have a couple of magnets on telescoping rods. One big and one small and they are both a real help at times.
If you have never tried a 2 finger mechanical finger, they are the best at hardware retrieval.

I would be surprised if you cannot get it with a magnet.

Good luck
