I mounted a ram mount in the hole where the left mirror would go since I converted to Street Glide mirrors.

I use a ram mount and my iphone, plug the phone into your radio and its easy to hear the directions. Tried my Garmin GPS but couldn't hear it or see the screen as well as my phone.

I searched, and found a Garmin Zumo 660, with lifetime maps, for $300..... definitely worth the time spent searching.... I picked up a Garmin 885 fro around $100, but then had to purchase a Ram holder, and Lifetime maps (got them on sale from Garmin)
https://www.thegpsstore.com has the zumo 395LM for $330

I do know that the Garmin 590LM mount is compatible with the Harley fairing mount bracket, as I just mounted mine with that.

If you ever plan to sell the bike, I personally wouldn't drill/alter any part of it. I'd make everything re-moveable.

My RAM for my Garmin 590 works great. If I ever sell the bike, easy to remove it and the power cradle so new owner can do what they wish with the bike.

I bit the bullet and bought a zumo 660. I travel 6 states with my work truck and learned the lesson the hard way, a good GPS beats using a phone based navigation hands down. Using Base Camp and gong to some POI sites where you can download GPX files you can get routes and trips that many have taken the time to upload. These files are free online, and once you get to understand basecamp software, it is easy to load the routes you want up, as well as create custom trip maps for your own trip.
