Going through my yearly "I want a touring bike" phase. I'm really hot on the Road King, but currently have a Switchback and going to the RK feels getting a super sized version of what I currently have.
Which leads me to the Street Glide and Electra Glide Limited (oops, found out this bike is called the Electra Glide Ultra Classic...EGUC).
When the M8's debuted in 2017, wound up taking test rides on a then new 2017 Street Glide Special, Road Glide Special and Road King. Thought the RK was the easiest of the 3 to pilot, but of the faired bikes I liked the SG better than the RG. I found this surprising since most say the fairing on the RG cuts the wind better and what not.
It seems that for roughly $3k more than the SG, the EGUC gives a touring trunk, the nifty passenger accommodations, slightly longer rear shocks, aux lights, plusher seat and some other bells/whistles. I should note, not a fan of the current version of the SG Special. I'm targeting the regular SG. While the SG appears to have a sleeker look, is there any advantage to getting an SG over an EGUC? On paper, I think the EGUC offers a lot. Is it correct to assume that the trunk on the EGUC can be removed?

Go big, you can remove the trunk off the FLHTK if you want.
Remove stuff you don't want and sell or keep things to put back on for trips or as needed. I take my lowers off in the summer, but you won't be able to do that on the 14+ LTD's. I use my tour pack to bring stuff to work so that stays on.
Harley makes a kit to remove the tour pack (but if your like me, and most of the other FLHTK guys I ride with, you'll find out that you like the extra storage) not to mention the kit is $700+ which can buy a lot of other goodies.
I have a 2018 Electra glide ultra classic. The only problem I have with it is that it is too tall for me, so I am looking at a lower seat. I could put a bracket on to remove the tour pack, but I use it to carry stuff in all the time and I store my helmet(s) in when I park it.
In my opinion it is a fine bike and I am glad I have it. I just wish I would have waited for the 2019 stereo with apple car play, but I didn't know it was coming out.

Agree. You can always get a quick detach kit for the tour pack. My previous bike was a 09 ultra classic and I had planned on taking the tour pack off and putting it back on if I went on a trip. I ended up never taking the tour pack off because it comes in very handy.
I bought the Street Glide and then ended up buying the stuff that would have come standard on an Electra Glide, sort of wished I would have gotten the EG now.
yer right, it does.
and if you really "want a touring bike" and intend to actually tour, you'll want the stuff that the LTD comes with. as others have said, the MoCo sells a detach kit for the tour pak, should you decide you can't live w/o that 'sleeker look'
You can also buy all of the detach hardware aftermarket and save a few hundred off the MOCO prices. They work just as good, and do the same thing at half the price.
