Boy, you are right about that second filter having problems! I would not run it.
Those are very good pictures, so Id be inclined to run them by Harley custom service.
I'd have liked to talk to them today, alas they aren't in the office according to their website-
"To speak with a Harley-Davidson customer care representative please call 800-258-2464 or 414-343-4056.
Representatives are available Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time (CDT)."
Hey Dan89FLSTC, I have found you to be a smart and reasonable person from your many posts... I also note that at times you seem to have very little patience with issues you don't like or agree with (as do I...)
But I have to ask, did you see the comparison pics between the two sets of slots/louvers, inside the two HD filters in post #47.....??
The pictures were not posted by the OP.
I don`t think any of us understood what the OP meant by slots in the filter until he finally explained it in post 29.
The OP never said the slots appeared to be damaged, he just griped that the oil filter now had slots instead of holes, that is what I commented on.
I don`t see the fact that the internal structure having slots is a problem, but I agree that they must be formed correctly.
To everyone: I apologize for my abrasive posts, sometimes I need a kick in the head...

Now looking at those pics on the PC it looks like a row or two are barely open. No worry's for me as I have never used a Harley filter. Bosch or Ford filters is all I've used in my hogs except for trying a mesh for a short time.
The bottom pic in post #46 looks just like the new filter i bought 8-25-22 and it really concerned me on how much the oil flow would be reduced. I wil be returning the filter for something different after my phone call to HD Monday morning. I am betting they know nothing about the problem. And it does look like a real problem.
So I went back and read this thread again. A couple of things. First, the filter the OP is talking about is the H-D filter, #63798-99A in chrome, correct?
Second, @silverbulletking, what is the P/N of the filter you posted pics of? You have a 17 Road King, so Im guessing you have a new M8 filter in black, which would be P/N 62700296. Is that correct?
Also, do any of the H-D filter have a date code on them? If youre not sure, heres a link to an oil filter date decoding thread.

I posted the part number in post #26, 62700296 is correct. I just went out & checked the oil filter I took off yesterday, there is no date code on HD filters that I can find. I don't think I've ever seen a code at all on HD filters as far as I can remember- maybe they think it ruins the aesthetics? It's certainly an HD filter as 1, that's all I ever used until yesterday. And if I wasn't absolutely sure, 2, it has the bar & shield stamped into it.
I think it's only on the box. I posted all the numbers I could find on the filter or box in post #26. As far as why both filters are having the same problem? My guess is they're using the same stamping/die machine for the internals on both filters. It's a money saving technique a lot of companies use to save on downtime (any time a machine isn't running, you're losing money).

The filter i bought is for twin cam engine part # 63798-99A the other numbers on the box are as follows 62700296, PKG200074 and 12-28001-4280. Does this shed any light on what i have ?
At the start of this thread i may have been a little vague on what the problem was. If i came off as whining or ranting i surely did not mean it to sound that way. I was just pissed off i drove 65 miles round trip to get a filter and ended up with a defective one. This is the grreatest forum on the planet with great people on it. It's a pleasure to be able to talk to people with the same interests.
Well, let me say this. Thanks to this thread, I'll be taking a peek down inside all my oil filters for now on! No matter the brand! Easy insurance. I'm a K&N guy myself and ALWAYS just ***-u-me that they're good to go, but a quick looky-loo will never hurt!
Let us know what you find. As i said before i had a flow problem with a Purolator filer on a car that had these slots. It was starving the engine for oil. All filters are not created equally.
I will snap some pictures of what is in the garage today, with part numbers.
