After reading through the bobistheoilguy thread I decided to check my brand-new HD oil filter.
Well guys, I'm going to stay the hell away from HD oil filters for quite some time.
This is wholly unacceptable for something that costs as much & is billed as a "premium filter". I'll be calling the dealer & returning it.
I guess I'm doing my oil change today (my Road King currently has an HD filter) & I'll be checking the filter that is currently on my Road King when I take it off too.
Who knows when this idiocy started.
XL pic so that even phone/tablet users can get a good view
Definitely worth looking at. I have an HD (the long one), a Wix, an S&S, a Fram, and an Amsoil (all for my bike) sitting on the shelf. I am going to compare. Have S&S on the bike right now, but it is due for a change.
Here`s a novel idea: Give the company a chance to address your concern before you jump on a forum and whine and rant.
Who was whining and ranting ? I was trying to get some information on these new filters. There is not a better place to ask questions than right here on this forum. Now that all see that they have changed the design we can move forward with more investigating of what the effects will be on our engines.
Asking questions is not whining or ranting about a product.

Let us know what you find. As i said before i had a flow problem with a Purolator filer on a car that had these slots. It was starving the engine for oil. All filters are not created equally.
Instead of complaining about it on a forum, why don`t you send a note and pics to the MOCO and tell them about the issue?
We can`t fix the issue, but they certainly can.
I just got back from the dealer. I showed the guy the parts dept & 2 of the salesmen. The salesmen seemed concerned- 1 just bought a new 22 LRST. The parts dept guy, not so much. He wanted to just exchange it, I said I'd rather not as I just can't trust the build quality at this moment. He gave me a refund & I was on my way home.
I'll be making a youtube vid (people deserve to know so they can check if their filter is having the same problem) & I'll be contacting HD. Here's the problem I have- if the new manufacturer can't get something as simple as stamping louvers out, why would I trust they picked the right spring for the oil bypass? Or maybe the rubber they picked isn't up to snuff. Or the filter media. If I can't trust someone with something as simple as a knife, I sure as hell can't trust them with a gun if you get my drift. I know this is likely a supply chain issue, they tried out a new manufacturer they thought was reputable. Turns out they aren't up to snuff on QC.
I TRUST NO COMPANY TO FIX A PROBLEM ON THEIR OWN. I've worked too many jobs & seen too much crap to trust any company to fix a problem on their own unless it's literally killing people. How many guys had their oil pumps fail on 2017/2018/early 2019 bikes & the had to just eat it because the MOCO said "Sorry son, looks like you're out of warranty"? Just so you know I'm not just picking on the MOCO, I've seen car & medical equipment manufacturers do the same kind of stuff. Takata airbags for instance.
Now, I get to experience the excitement of going out to change my oil & seeing if I went 2500 miles with a defective oil filter. Hooray!
It looks as if I dodged a bullet.
The bad news is I know I purchased this filter on 3/31/22, So any time after that can be the new faulty HD oil filters.
I wish I could narrow it down more but I can't. Maybe someone will chime in that bought one in April/May/June/July so we have a better timeframe?
The HD oil filter I bought 3/31/22 that was on my bike with 2500 miles since the last oil change-
The new (purchased 8/13/22) HD faulty filter again for reference-

Thanks for the clarification on the deficiencies you found.....
I'm no engineer, but comparing the two photos, it sure looks to me like the bottom picture filter was designed to be like the top picture filter, but something in the manufacturing process went wrong...
I believe those slots, louvers, or whatever they are called are most likely stamped into that metal... looks like a bad, worn out die, or maybe the wrong pressure was used for stamping...
I would be surprised if the MoCo saw that and wasn't concerned... They may ask for all the numbers on the filter/case/box to try to figure out the lot/run of that filter in the bottom pic...
If they are concerned, I doubt they'd tip their hand...... Let us know what they say

Hey Dan89FLSTC, I have found you to be a smart and reasonable person from your many posts... I also note that at times you seem to have very little patience with issues you don't like or agree with (as do I...)
But I have to ask, did you see the comparison pics between the two sets of slots/louvers, inside the two HD filters in post #47.....??
I'd be interested to know your impression on them. It sure looks like a bad stamping to me that would certainly lead to a lower flow rate....
How do you see it....?
PS- Hey Max, if you happen to see this, I would like to read your impressions on the pics in post #47....
