Question Oil pressure switch - 2014 RK

Putting the baby to bed today and I noticed that the wire to the oil pressure switch was broken. However I am not getting any oil pressure warnings or diagnostic messages. Obviously I'll repair it, but I'm curious as to why none of the internal systems recognised the fact that the switch was, in fact, disconnected. Any ideas?

Good question. I would wonder about that as well. Hopefully someone with some insight will enlighten us….

The BCM expects you to be smart enough to notice that the oil light don't turn on when the ignition is turned on and the motor ain't running?

Possibly, but I don't imagine many riders would notice a light not lighting up at start-up. Regardless, an error code saying, "Hey, I can't get an oil pressure reading." would be nice IMO.

But perhaps that's just me.

i would think that if the wire to the sending unit was broken, then the light would illuminate and not turn off?

That's what I'd expect.

And you guys would be wrong.. In the old days the wire served as a grounds for the light with a normally closed switch.. Pressure would open the connection.. Your idea from a failure point of view would be good but it would require a device, relay, or solid state logic to implement..

I understand, and agree with you, but with all the electronics already on the bike another simple circuit would seem to be a no-brainer. But it would probably add $2.00 to the build cost and $100.00 to the price! Anyway, thanks for the comments. Now I'll have to go and fix the wire.

Well the fact that oil pressure is read by a micro processor in the BCM the only issue would be some non recurring engineering that would include some programing, a release of new docs and part update. I'm not sure but I think the M8s might have the feature. Anyone want to unplug the pressure sensor to see if it tosses a code?
