I think you’re right about modern FI cars - I’ve gotten as far as a few miles in a car with a shot alternator. Not sure (how/if) that translates to our bikes though.

About a month ago I took a stroll down to Charlottesville VA from DC area. “Back roads”. Bike died in Charlottesville… first misfiring, then cutting out, then gauges shut off, then died. Swapped the batt from at a local auto parts place and headed back - full blast down the interstate. Made it all the way back to my place before the battery light came on. Cut it off in the garage and it fired back up… it tested at something like 11V on my handheld voltmeter. So a fresh battery got me a couple hours at 75-85 mph on an FI bike. I was floored. Changed out the stator today and the insulation on one circuit was cooked. This is on an 04 twin cam with an 06 EFI system.

Now all that said maybe my 3-phase stator was operating on 1 or two phases during that ride, but I certainly wasn’t expecting it to make it nearly that far.

I thought you bought a Cycle Electric Regulator.....

Finally had a moment to get to the stator. Looks pretty mint to me... Except for the cord.

Yeah, If it ain't leaking oil out of the primary through the plug, I'd try and find a pigtail connector to solder back on.. CE might have had one. There wasn't any oil traveling through the wires either.

I just received my new stator from C.E. unfortunately.

Well I guess you install it and see if it corrects the over charging issue.. It may not. It also may not have been a bad regulator to start but the regulator is now bad due to the random shorted phase wire from the alternator to ground.

Understood. Would I want to order another new regulator before I run the bike with the new stator? I have read that if one is bad, it can damage the other. If this regulator is now bad I'd hate to run it and possibly do harm to the new stator.

While the poor shorted connection could kill the regulator as it has solid state electronics in it, the stator is pretty robust.. I've seen loose connections kill rectifiers /regulators but not stators. It's up to you..

This has been a mini nightmare...
