Electrical issues
Now that's a thought. Once you get it torn down to where you can access the stator it might be possible to just replace the wiring. I suspect the original unit doesn't have a replaceable pigtail, but once you get it to that point you might be able to repair it. Just to be safe though once you get down to that point if you think it has been grounding out might not want to trust it long term.

Not hard job, but tedious.
One dumb thing I just learned few years ago was to take bolt completely out of shifter and it will come of splines easy. I used to loosen and fight. I was working with friend who is indie. He must have thought I was a born. Told me to grab shifter of tranny on bench, and I said I had to work it off.
I'd look at shifter shaft seal. I would probably do primary bearing too
Just an update while I wait for the new stator to arrive. I've been taking rides locally and the bike has been running perfect, with no codes or check engine lights coming on. I appreciate everyone's input on this issue, and I've definitely learned a lot. I'm hoping in the future this thread will help someone else with similar issues. Also hoping the change out will go easily...

I can't say I would not consider this. And do a few other things since it is a part.
But I would also be nervous on road
This is why nice to have two bikes, and even two almost identical. But I still like to spend summer riding.
A pro could do this in hours. Call it a week of week nights after work. Not rushing. Day off, day on, day to do it. Day to replace bearing in primary and shifter shaft seal
I get it those are sand bagging. But I am talking easy after work. And nothing goes quick. Especially if you never did it
In past I was removing floor boards, maybe my least favorite part. I worked with indie, I think he just loosened remove shifter bolt completely.
Clutch left hand threads. I would not do with out manual.
Could even consider a night to rebuild clutch, not saying I did every time.
If you wait to winter I might consider sprocket shaft seal behind stator. I replaced mine year after I replaced stator. Probably was already bad.
