The HD service manager told me that the newer bikes with the O2 sensors now automatically compensate for different air intake and exhaust pipes? Is that wrong?
A simple air cleaner change does not mandate a reflash/retune.
We went from the stock football to the K & N 3909 Filter with Carbon Fiber Aero Tech Cover, without the need of a retune. Bike is an 06 Cop Glide, FullSac true Dual Kit, stock mufflers.
Runs well, plugs look good according to a NASCAR head engine builder, and the bike runs strong, for a "stock" bike.
As was previously stated, there is a lot of "I Think" passed off asFACT on the Web.
Read/learn all you can, make an informed decision, and most of all RIDE EM
Look it up in the parts book. The "stage one" that HD will do is an air cleaner ONLY, they have NO download for air cleaner and pipes.
The dealer told you the truth.
If you add pipes then you need another download because it will run even leaner and the Dealer does not support it.
Wrong, the stage 1 consits of a SE air cleaner and it requires a ecm recalibration, its stated in the ad for the air cleaner. It takes the a/c and the download to be a stage 1 upgrade.
I stand Corrected, thanks.
I knew what I was thinking when I typed, I guess my tongue got in front of my eye tooth and I could not see what I was saying....
I missed typing the ECM download from HDapplies onlyto the air cleaner, and is not for air cleaner plus pipes. Thebiggest point I wanted to get was the dealer was telling the truth when he said he did not have a stock ECM download that covers air cleaner and pipes.
ok i got another answer today from another dealer service. said there was a download for the 08's for air cleaner this is a street download only. so guess im gonna put the SE A/C back on and try the download. not sure if I got the warm fuzzies over with all the different responses i got from different dealers oh well nothing ventured nothing gained.

Going back and reading what the OP said the dealer told him wrt ECM flash/recalibration- "Finally an old timer sales person told me that harley didn't do this on bikes newer than '05, but that If I wanted to do AC, I should get a SERT ($460)."Based on that I still don't think the dealer provided a correct answer or even appeared to know what they were talking about....
[/quote] The stage 1 download is available for all years with EFI, just had it done to my 08, price is 149.00 + .5 hour labor. The downloads are not tangable they are on the dealers hd network website for the dealer to download into your ecm. If a service manager doesnt know what one is, you need to be dealing with somebody else because they are very un informed.

So with that flash on your 08 how does it run? any popping, surging ect. are you happy with it? Im waiting for my 08 Ultra and would like to find out if its worth it or leave it stock. So far everyone says they are running great out of the box. Whats your opinion?
The ecm from harley does what they want it to do, does it do the job as well as it should? I dont think so, so as such I believe its flawed.
Harley didn't design it. They bought a solution from Delphi.
The ECU has sufficient auto-tuning and does a remarkable job. If you don't like it, replace it.
I'm guessing that HD didn't just buy an off-the-shelf solution without even the slighest of tweaks for their application. I'm sure with the quantity they are buying from Delphi, it would be well worth the effort for Delphi to 'customize' the unit for HD. That pdf looks like a sales tool to show potential buyers what is available, with the understanding that the modules are easily tailored to meet the specific needs of the buyer. Obviously I'm speculating, but I would be shocked if HD bought a one-size-fits-all solution.
The stage one reflash in my opinion is a BIG WASTE of money. If you look at the fuel curve and the timing tables they are super lean and have a very retarded timing rate. All to meet EPA. When Harley reflashed my 06 with the stage one, it surged and popped on deaccelateration like never before. What a waste of $150.
Look, if you can afford a over priced harley, and you want to improve the performance a bit, get the SERT and I or others can send you some dyno proven tables for nothing. Heck, I laugh when you guys complain about the cost of mods, yet if you really wanted performance, go by a GSX 1300 and do blistering 9 second quarters passes for about 10k less.
Email me if you want a decent SERT tune for SE slip ons and AC add ons. We picked up an honest 7 hp over the stage one tune and it DOESNT pop on decel.
