About 3.5 quarts is all I can get in mine at oil change. These bikes don't like to be overfilled. It's probably better to run a little low than have too much oil in the bike. The tank shouldn't be full or the oil pump can't siphon and return oil correctly. That and it pukes oil out the filter all over the bike.
What type of oil are you guys putting in at 500mi.... knowing that at 1000mi the dealer is going to drain it all out. Manual says diesel grade 15W40 if I need to top up.... so what is everyone using at 500mi.... I do plan on using synthetic after the 1000mi service.
You shouldn't need any oil at 500 miles, unless you're changing it...
I am changing it cause I won't have enough mileage for the 1000mi service and I dont want to leave the break-in oil in the engine over the winter... even the HD manual says to replace the oil for off season storage. Plus, I think it is a good idea to get rid of the oil after the 1st 500 miles... oil is cheap compared to a V-Twin engine.

I went ahead and spent the extra to do syn 3 for my 500. Though it may be a waste of money.... I feel getting the synthetic in asap will ultimatly do my bike good (just IMO-from all the years of playing with hot motorcross engines) I do plan on looking for Redline 20/50 for engine and primary and 95/145 for the tran @ 1000 (get rid of that dang shifting clank).
