Default RE: Single front caliper...

Howard, as time allows I will do that.....I can tell you that my perception is that the six piston stops better.....much better.........now if a man put two quality four piston calipers on a wheel, I think they would stop better than one six. I just got in two police road kings with ABS.....and I got to say, they stop better than ANY Harley I have ever been on, but then the ABS is a whole different deal. I am not arguing for the sake of it, I just think that pre 08's brakes were junk, and that the cause of most wrecks are not front braking power, or lack there of, it's just getting run over by a cager, or riding beyond one's skills set. Howard, you are a smart man, and I thank you for the kind words, and appreciate your efforts to get all you can get out of a Harley. My aims are different, I wantaHarleyto ride well, run well, and look like a million bucks, if I am headed for the twisties, I am going to do it on something other than a Harley, if my main concern is speed and performance. Different bikes for different applications, I dont ride the mountains much on my chop, but there aint no better feeling than cruising through town, watching that front tire streched way out there. It's all good brother, and I wish you the best......and admire you passion to which you go about your business. I dont want to be known as the brake ****....lol......I just think that one is enough if it's done right, and it's a quality product. I passed a chance this week to sell two 360's to people here on the forum. I just dont have the confidence in them anymore. But I would have no trouble telling someone to put a six piston on their bagger....07' and earlier, cause I really belive it's safer.

No shots were ever given. Just the facts as I see them. I do not wish for anyone to get into a situation they can not get out of. Things on the road happen to me, I am a very careful rider. I do not heal as easiy as other at 59. I have been doing this for 39 years and I have witnessed many things. Biking is for the individual and not for anyone to tell a rider how to live. With that said, I am done I hope.
Howard - I highlighted in my original post where I thought you were taking a shot. We are going to have to agree to disagree and move on. As to the writing you and I have done off the forum, that's between us and I'm not going to air it out here.

I love the look of a single caliper and rotor. And, although I have no experience of it, believe you would be fine with a 6 piston caliper and a 13" rotor. I, for one, would never spend big bucks on custom wheels, to only cover them up with two rotors. Although, I have seen some 21" wheels, with two rotors where you can see at least a little bit, of those pricy wheels.

Sorry guys I didn't mean to start a shitstorm here. (hey but at least it isn't another freakin oil thread or how to tie a doo rag thread). Just started researching this, but I am convinced a good 6 piston caliper with quality pads will offset the loss of 1 front rotor. And if it doesn't I'll eat crow and switch back no problem.

The heavy baggers need all the braking power they can get. They put two disks on there for a reason. No way would I do anything to make such an important component any weaker.
AMEN to that. HD didn't put the second caliper there because they had extra ones lying around.

Steveh
Would you put my name as beneficiary on your policy?

99.9% of the time you may get by with one caliper regardless of whether it is a 4 or 6 pot unit, but what about the other .1 %?

Steve - I should be the one apologizing to you for starting the storm on your thread. My bad.

Zach - no need to apologize man... I didn't see where you started anything... some people just seem to freak out over some things it seems... the internet is a great and terrible thing like that... and the only posts I see from some people are consistently negative no matter the subject. besides, I wasn't asking anyone IF I should do it anyway... thats my decision and I have no problem with it.

Maybe off base but I have noticed that the fast sport bikes (drag bikes) are running only one disc for weight savings. Granted some have six piston calipers, and they are stronger they also are running quite a bit faster. And its not just the light ones, but the busas and zx14s. All FatBaggers bikes also only run 1 disc up front also. Just thought I would throw some gas on the fire........
