I ran into a friend Saturday night in a tavern that does repair work at the MOCO here in Milwaukee and mentioned I was planning on buying a '06 or '07 bagger in spring, seeking his input on better/worse. He said GET AN 08!
He also said there are alot of starters being replaced on 07 models but I haven't seen much about that here. I couldn't get into detail with him unfortunately, could he have been referring to models other than the Touring ones?
Your buddy knows nothing, first the 06 has a different starter setup than the 07 and there was no change from 07 to 08. So if you want to listen to him best ask him which honda you should buy maybe he will have better luck guessing about them

Gunrunner is right....except that the 06 dyna has the same set up as the 07 and 08 tourers
The only '07's I've heard of that have starter issues are police bikes. And they are 103's.
I agree somewhat with stro; it's the higher compression ratios that are going to eat the starters:
Twin Cam 103
⢠cu. in.
Engine for Police Models
⢠1690 cc CVO engine
⢠9.6:1 Compression ratio
The stock 96" engines have higher comp ratios that before; and IMO riders that are modding their enginesand creatinghigher ratios are going to see failures unless the heads are equipped with releases. The 110" CVO crowd is seeing failures, and it appears there might be some ACR failures unknown to the rider at the time.
If I go the 103" route, I will install the manual releases in the heads whether they are modified or left stock!
I had the same problem and it was diagnosed as being caused by the automatic compression releases not working properly - one was getting a signal but not operating. Could not believe gears were not torn up but apparantly they were not. When tech replaced both acr's he replaced the starter under warranty also (chrome, of course!) since he determined it had been damaged.
My starter shiit the bed at 8850 miles. May have something to do with the higher compression of a 103. Put the 1.4kw hi-torque starter in and will install compression releases, just to be on the safe side.
I have a road king classic 2007. I had a broken tooth on a starter gear probably from a backfire while starting. Every once in a while the bike would make a noise when trying to start. Dealer fixed under warranty. Good to always start in neutral, I was told. I have always made a habit of starting in neutral anyway.
11000 miles on bike.
No problems with mine except for a loose ground wire. I'm fairly confident, knowing the people that haunt these boards, that if there was a problem with starters on '07s, this place would be crawling with posts about it.
Whooooeeee! I went to Carlsbad, New Mexico from Tucson, AZ. Normally an 8 hour ride and I made in 15 hours. First wouldn't start after gas up in Lordsburg. Thank god for HOG assistance. got her push started and rode to Barnetts of Los Cruces. They had only one mechanic on saturday and diagnosed it as dead battery. $189.00 and next gas stop later it would not start again. Refered to Barnetts of ElPaso, Tx, they found the contact on the starter solenoid pitted. cleaned it up and sent me on my way. Had a nice visit with my Dad in hospital (stroke), and it started fine on the way back today until Deming, NM. But this time Bobby of Barnetts in El Paso had shown me how to remove the cover on the starter solenoid and depress the plunger while pushing the start button and veroom!!! I didn't shut her down till I got back to Tucson HD. They will be replacing the starter. Sorry guys, this FLHT starter is bad at 20,006 miles.
