"DIY MODS" and TRICKS to SAVE $$$$$$

My thought is this, I have an older JVC head unit which has an ipod interface as well. If I could figure out which wire on the HK unit did what function, I could buy the proper connections, and splice my interface into the HK Radio.
Is the grey box that comes with the interface kit the actual control box? Meaning without that part of the kit, will I not have control over the pod? I know I can just plug it in the aux port, but I would like to be able to have the fingertip control and leave the pod in the Tourpak.
Any help would be great.
To add, Its not really a DIY as I bought a kit, but it appears as though on the newer FLHTCU (i have an 11 that i just got) if you want to do the acc port in the tourpak, you no longer need to take off the seat and run the extra wire. When you take out your liner, there is now an extra switched power wire already in the tourpak. So now when you buy the kit for the power outlet, you will have an extra wire.

Here is my quick mod for cheap caddy lights. You can pick up a set off eBay for around 50 bucks. Once you get the set, junk the back section of the lights which hold the bulbs and start working on the bezzels. I notched the bezzels with a Dremel (see pic of notched/un-notched) to fit inside the stock light bar light casings. The width doesn't have to be perfect, just eyeball it and keep cutting till they fit - however, make SURE the cut is flush at the bottom of the lip. Flushing the cut at the bottom of the lip will make the light mount clean - if there is extra material at the bottom of the lip, there will be a gap when you mount the light.

Once that is done, pick up 6 u-nuts and matching 6 bolts. Insert the bezzel in the blinker casings, secure in a vise and drill three holes big enough for your bolts. You will find that the bezzel is just a bit small to fit in the casing, so after you drill the holes, clip on the u-nuts to the bezzel where you drilled the holes. Now it's a perfect tight fit. Bolt it together and mount the light bar.

And installed...

All in all about $59 with lights, u-nuts & bolts and took about 1-2 hours (4-5 beers in beer-time). Enjoy!
