Default DIY - Installing an adjustable backrest

I got my backrest installed and forgot to post the DIY I promised. Hubby helped me out for a few items and so I could take pictures.

This is an installation of the adjustable backrest on an '08 Ultra Classic.

I found the instructions pretty easy to follow. Really didn't need the service manual though it mentioned it a couple of times.

No backrest

The first task was to remove the seat. I removed the left bag, unscrewed the grab strap, removed the seat screw, and gently lifted the seat out.

Remove the left side cover.

Removed the Flange nuts

Default RE: Installing an adjustable backrest

Pulled the plastic hose clamp for the Evaporator Canister Tube (CA Bikes Only)

Following the instuctions I mounted the adjustable handle bracket and added the new canister tube clamp (cheap plastic thingy)

Threading the adjustment handle was a bit of a problem though lower drain hole. Hubby had to coax it through with the leverage of a screw driver.

Next I loosened the fuse box housing a bit to route the cable over the top and under the frame to the back fender.

Then screwed the adjustment handle in place.

Adding the speed nut we began to fit the backrest bracket in the bike. we found we had to loosen up the electrical connector on the rear fender and shift slight to the side. We also found we had to loosen the connector in front of the front tab to get the screw driver in there.

Then we connected the backrest cable to the backrest bracket.

Very nice instructions.

How are those screws held in place. Do you have to reach underneath the fender to tighten the nuts when installing the base bracket of the backrest.

Time to replace the side cover and prepare to replace the seat...

Finally replace the seat and insert the back rest (getting your hand in there sucks)

Looks great and works as advertised. Best part is I saved $80 (1 hr) service time at least

The screws in the fender will stay in as long as you don't knock them hard. I've never removed the fender to find out how they mount them but theywill hold there without the screws while you do the installation. There is no need to reach under the fender.

Thanks, I thought you had to reach underneath so you can hold on to the screw so it does not turn while tightening the nuts.
