Was thinking of painting inner fairing om my 05 eg classic. is taking the inner fairing off an easy job ? if i take it off to have painted by a friend who does paint , does the fairing need to be primed or can you paint over the stock inner fairing? please help.

My Pops has his inner color matched to the Glacer White factory paint....Looks great.

Chances are your painter will have to use a 'flex-additive' to keep the paint from cracking due to the fairing being plastic. Not a big deal - they do bumper covers for cars with it all the time.

Removal is not too difficult. Gotta pull the gauges & such while you have it out. We upgraded the gauges on Pops to the brushed stainless...looks cool in the white fairing.

Good Luck.

Oh, BTW, if you are going to go thru the work of having that painted... I would suggest finding some other parts that you can colormatch also. We had the horn cover, floorboard brackets & pans, switch-housings, ect. done all at the same time (we powdercoated most of it (rather than paint)). Juat a suggestion.

+1 on the Service Manual. Did mine almost a year ago--easy job just tedious; no special tools required, just the T27 Torx socket/drivehead to remove the outer fairing. Many HDFers have done their own--some find using ziplock bags to hold the various stuff removed and labeling them helps--I didn't, but did have sufficient work space to keep things pretty well organized for the reinstallation.

You didn't ask, but FWIW, when I painted my inner fairing I also swapped out the black face gauges for spun aluminum HD gauges (purchased new from "webescooters" and Ebay seller for 325 delivered) and sold the take-offs on Ebay. With the painted inner fairing and new gauges, it seemed like a new bike while riding it because the view was so different.

You may also be able to find a set of silver/white face SG or RG gauges as take-offs which would also be a very nice change. Nothing wrong with the black face gauges, but visually the swap isa lot of bang for the buck IMO.

While you have the fairings off, it would also be a good time to swap out the air temp gauge for an oil temp gauge, swap the OEM speakers, install a fairing mounted antenna, etc.

It's only money, right????

Good luck with your project--you CAN do it.

Funny you should ask lol. i was on line before looking at the spun aluminum HD gauges . lol one thing turns into another project when you start taring things apart. Didn't think about the antenna and speakers , thanks for reminding me lol,$$$ . always wanted to up-grade to the hog tunes. ever heard them and are they a good up grade for the stock radio on an 05 EG. i have heard good reviews but never actualy heard them in person. any way keep the shinny side up.

hEY tAYLORIZED , thanks for the pictures. What a differencea little color makes. like the gsuges . they are like the cherry on top of the sunday. I have to admit , the one picture with the both inner and outer fairings off really looks like aclip from a horror show. Dam , it looks like you really need to keep track of everything when removing both fairings. any way thanks for the pictures. Your ride really looks kick'en, nice job.
