Default Need some FBW advice....URGENT/HELP PLEASE....

Hey everyone,

I just picked up my 08 roadglide and had a set of wild1 572 14" apes put on. The bars are awesome but the grip is dragging on the switchhousing and it makes the throttle difficult to twist without the bike being pretty "jumpy" while riding it. I can spray some wd40 onto the side of the switchhousing and it clears up for a minute so I know my problem is right there. My question is if I take the 3 torx head screws out of the switch housing is there anything that I have to worry about falling out or messing up? I think I need to take the housing off and take some fine grit sandpaper to the housing to make just a tad bit of clearance on it. Please give me some advice because I am suppose to leave tomorrow for a 1k mile trip and I definitely don't want to have to ride with it like it is. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

On my 05 I am good. Everything is secured in. I just have tobe careful of the brass ferrels (sp?) that hold the throttle and idle cables. I don't know if you have this issue.

He has an 08, it's FBW.

You need to make sure that you place a cardboard shim (make one yourself) between the brake handle housing and brake hand grip (pull the brake lever and insert the cardboard shim near the base housing where the pin is).

The risk of not doing this may damage the brake microswitch in the handlebar lever base.

It sounds like they did not get the FBW assy inserted into the handlebar all the way, or the grip is not seated correctly thus the rubbing against the housing causing your problem.

Take it into the dealer as soon as they open and make them fix it right. Taking that throttle assy out leaves risk of damage to the cruise, mode and brake switch.

Can't believe they let you take it out like that, I would be pi**ed.

One thing you an check real easly is does the grip move in and out at all? What I am getting to is the switch housing may need to move twards the outside of the bars a smidge. The grip rides in a groove in the switch housing but if the housing is pulled in to far it will have friction arount the inside of the groove and the grip.

Make sense?

THanks for the info guys. I took the housing off and the grip off and the reostat(fbw device) in the end of the bars is what is binding. Is it possible that the inside diameter of the chubbies are just a tad smaller than the oem bars causing the reostat to bind up? It is definitely in the reostat. Yeah I've had a terrible experience with this dealer and will probably carry it to another one I have done more business with. Right now I'm thinking that changing the reostat may be the next step.

I just wanted to let you guys know what I found. I was at the dealer today when they opened(another one that did not install the bars). They didn't have any free time for a tech today but they spent a few minutes going over how to remove the fbw device in the handlebar so I came home and pulled it out. It looks to me like maybe when it was assembled into the bar that it was hit and has damaged the reostat. With it out of the bar I can turn the reostat and tell that is the place that my resistance is coming from. So I'm going to have to replace it to make it right. Noone in town has one in stock but my first stop tomorrow does have one so I'll pick it up and carry the tools to do it if I have to and if not I'll swap it out when I get back home. Thanks again for all your help guys.
