A quick question? What is the best sealant to use for my new slip-ons? I have them on already but after a few hundred miles I can see where there is a slight leak at the junction, and I'm getting some minor decel popping. The clamps are tight so I figured I would try some sealant. Any advice would be very helpful....Thanks B
Permatex sells high temp copper exhaust sealant, it's gold in color. Put a bead around the muffler inlet before sliding it on the header pipe, tighten down the clamp, and let it sit overnight to cure.
I like the Permatex copper, although you really shouldn't need it. I do it just for my own "feel good", just a very small bead, just below the pinch slots. Also, I make sure the clamp is only on the muffler as far as it needs to go, avbout 1/16" from the end to get maximum clamping.
I'm about to add some V&H slip on's and had the same sealant question, so I'm glad someone ELSE asked it ;-).
Now for my question. I would ***-U-ME that you put the V&H on in the same position (the brackets) as the OEM pipes. Someone wrote in that he had but a pair of aftermarket slipons on and had a lot of racket because he hadn't tightened the brackets in the center of the mounts. Is there any truth to this or does it matter at all-whew!
I put Vance & Hines slip ons onmy 08 Ultra with no sealant.. So far no leaks but if I did it again or if they start leaking I would go to the Harley store and get Harley clamps. The Harley clamps looked superior to the Vance and Hines
