I'd start looking at the power wire that exits the housing and passes through the mounting bracket. The housing mounts using a threaded tube through which the power wire passes; requires a slotted socket or box-end wrench to tighten the nut--very easy to pinch that wire to create a short.

Did you recently change, remove, add or do anything to the spots? If you did start checking the area where you did the work and you will probably find a pinched wire. If not, then I would start following your connections/wires from the light sockets all the way to the main connectors...somewhere there has to be an exposed wire..take your time snoopin around.

Same thing happened to me even using the correct socket. The short is most likely where the wires exit the bottom(s) of the spots.
Always nice when an electrical problem resolves itself that easily and isn't a ground in the last place along the circuit that you checkand is in the least accessible part of same circuit. At least that's what I have heard...
not so nice!!!...i plugged it back in, turned them on and works fine...didn't think about it...so of course this morning i ride to work start her up, no prob...after about 2 mins the lights go out again!!!...must be a short somewhere, ah fun[:@]
