Idle reset for 08 touring models with electronic throttle
I learned today of a idle reset tip for my 2008 Road King Classic. My idle was too high and I found out that the electronic throttle sets the idle point at whatever rpm the bike was at when shut down last if shut down improperly. I had switched off the main ignition on the tank before I had turned off the run switch on the handlebar and had not let the bike wind down to idle speed before doing so. I guess I was in a hurry or maybe it was just a brain cramp. A tech at the dealer told me that it could be reset if I did the following:
Make sure the main ignition on the tank to off then turn the handle bar run switch on. Then turn the main switch on the tank on for 2 seconds and then off for 2 seconds. Do this last step four times ending in the off position.
It worked- the next time I started the bike the idle was correct.

Crag, probably the reason you're not getting alot of reponses is because most of us know this, it has been discussed many times before AND it's true what you say.

I think the two thing that I did improperly as I was getting used to a new bike was to shut off the main ignition switch (on the tank) instead of killing the engine with the handlebar mounted 'run' switch first. The seconed thing was to not let it reach idle speed before shutting it down. I'm not sure which one of these caused the problem or if it was both in combination

I probably should have checked the forum first. I don't post much but after that fix took care of the problem I was kind of surprised and probably rushed a little too quick to the keyboard.

I've never bothered using the "kill switch" on any bike I've ever owned, and there's been a lot of 'em. \\; The ignition switch does the same job, and using both of them just seems redundant to me. \\; The "kill switches" on my bikes (currently an '04 'Wing and an '08 Ultra Classic) stay in the "run" position and I ignore 'em. \\; No problems doing it this way, ever.
