Default Thinking about a SG?????

I've got a 2005 FXDI that I purcahsed new in May 2005 when I lived in NY. I now live in Arkansas and currently have 43000 miles on it with a Corbin Dual Tour, Boss Bags, windshield and a mustache bar.

Living in Arkansas I now have all points west to explore on a bike and hope to get two long rides in per year especially with the longer riding season in Arkansas.

On a long trip, riding the interstate, I can easily do 500-600 miles a day but I hope to be able to ride 700-800 a day and be more comfortable with a Street Glide.

I am contemplating trading my FXDI for a SG.

Looking at the SG it doesn't look like the hard bags hold very much. It also looks like a large duffle bag strapped to the passenger seat might rub the hard bags messing up the paint.

I don't want to add a sissy bar or the detachable hardware.

What do most SG owners do when hitting the open road?

I have the detachable sissy bar which I throw the HD tour bag on and use as a backrest. I don't have a problem with it touching the paint, but I have a denim paint so I don't think it would be much of an issue either way. Coming from an FXDC the SG is a blast on longer runs just for the radio alone.

Strap a water proof bag down on the passenger seat. Use towels or old t-shirts for padding if you think it's going to scratch your saddlebag paint.

Lid Haulers. They are covers for the saddlebag lids with straps on them that hold two nice size bags. Should do the trick if you don't wanna add a sissy bar or detachable hardware.

Oh and the hard bags hold more than ya think.

Lid Haulers

You can buy the Lid Haulers and the Lid Saks (the bags) together as a set from M&M Cycle on ebay for a great price.

The Street Glide is awesome on the road. I have the detachable passenger backrest with a Kury Ultra tour bag for a back rest. Very comfortable. Plenty of storage. A buddy just bought an 09, Unbelievable improvement!

You've got a ton of great riding to do right there in NW Arkansas.

If you're looking for another bike of somewhere to get stuff, be sure to find Barts place (Cateye Customs) in Russellville.

If there's something ya need, he can hook ya up!

The Lid Haulers look like they'll do the trick.

The reason I am concerned is when I rode from NY to Sturgis, I had a duffle bag strapped to the passenger seat of my FXDI. It rested on my leather Boss Bags. By the end of the trip (5500 miles) it has left 3 marks on the bags from where they rubbed. I can only imagine what that would have done to a painted hard bag.

I'm going up to NY for 3 or 4 weeks and will most likely look to see what kind of deal I can get on a 2009 SG when I get back.

Yes there is allot of beautiful riding in Arkansas. I've done quite a bit of riding around Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, a trip to Dallas and I took a week long ride to Key West this past March.

I just came back from a ride (in the car) with my kids to New Mexico and Colorado and I HAVE to go back once I get the SG.
