Using Redline 20w50 in the engine, change it at 5k miles.
Using Reline Shockproof Heavy in tranny, change at 10k miles
Using Dexron II ATF in Primary, change at 10k miles
The intervals Dalton recommended are the intervals recommended by Harley and are what I use, but I'll add that if you don't ride 10K a year, change the tranny and primary once a year. The same goes for the engine if you don't do 5K. I also recommend that our Northern neighbors that have to store their bike for the winter do a complete PM service BEFORE storage to remove as many contaminants from the power train as possible before you put it to bed.
Does oil go bad after a year, or 2 or longer, if it sits on the shelf?
Does it then it has to be thrown out, cause of it's age?
I don't think so. How does contaminents get in the oil? Just curious......
What Tyrant said +1
Engine oil gets contaminated from the combustion process. The mian contaminents are Carbon, Acids, water, small metal particles from wear and of course unburned fuel. The water and acids are the most detremental to our engines. As to the gearbox and primary, It's mostly small particles of metal and water as well as clutch material in case of the primary. Getting them out of the powertrain before they can settle out and become concentrated just makes good sense.
