I did it the same way, about $2.95 for the moment switch from Radio Shack
Same here. I'm not smart enough to take a simple, inexpensive idea and turn it into something more difficult and expensive. And the funny thing is that my garage door opener can't seem to tell the difference!
All Im stating is that a conventional relay when applied power to 85 and ground to 86, latches the relay. If your opener doesnt eat batteries being energized with using the high beams then, I find that surprising. The circuit drawing that I referenced to, shows a capacitor used so that the relay is only momentarily fired, solely for this very reason.
Great thread! I'm planning on doing something similar. I have wired external leads from the original garage door opener that when shorted, trigger the remote. I have a 2007 FLHT and do not intend to install a radio. I'm hoping to find someone with a wiring diagram that can tell me the wire color codes for the wire harness that would have been connected to the radio. I'd like to use the push in "audio" switch on the left side of the handlebar as my door opener trigger. I'm guessing that when the "audio" switch is pushed in, it just connects two leads in the radio harness. If I can locate those leads, I can open the garage door with a flick of the left thumb.
I'm also looking for the 12 volt power lead to the radio. My plan is to power the passing lamps with what should have been the radio power. This would allow me to run the passing lamps with the high beam headlight and not use the accessory circuit. I have heated clothing that I intend to use on the accessory circuit. Moving the passing lamps to the unused radio power will keep me from overloading the accessory circuit.

I found a voltage converter, which is adjustable to 3v 6v 9v etc. for $14. This would work for other applications in which a lower output voltage is needed. Heres the link: http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/...r-p-17554.html
