Bought the HD drivers backrest last summer, and rode with it all summer. I like it pretty well, but it has always seemed like it was standing too straight up-almost leaning forward and pushing me forward. I've been considering taking it loose (its the quick detatch backrest where you squeeze together to pull it out) and putting it in a press and (gently) bending it backwards just a tad right where it goes through the seat.
I managed to make mine work without bending. I added a couple of washers under the mount where it attaches to the fender, & took the strap that bolts to the frame & made a new one.
I had the adjustable one and had to do the same thing.
yep there is a set screw to adjust the angle. Its screwed as far out as it will go--still leans too far forward.
I'll try the washer thing before I do any bending.
i put mine in the vise removed the spring so that I could get a pipe over the two pieces at the same time and bent them until I was happy with the fit.
I also used washers under the front bolts.
Absolutely unbelievable that the MOCO can't get this right. None of this is necessary with a Mustang backrest. 2 minute install and a simple thumbscrew for adjustment which can be done while your riding.
I bent mine. It was pushing me way to far forward. I found the bars REALLY hard and had to heat them to bend them. It's been perfect ever since. I managed to get it right in the middle of the set screw adjustment range.
I had the same problem with mine. I was being pushed to forward. I did what you said in your first post. Put it in a press and bent it. Bending it back a little helped out a lot. If you need to adjust , you still have your screw to adjust with. I tryed the washers to slant it back but it did not work. I put it in a press and used a 1" or so pipe between the backrest bars and press to bend it. Used the pipe so I would get a round bend on the two bars. Worked out good. Use it on a 09 ultra.
i took a die grinder and notched the rear of the mounting bracket [2@] where the backrest bars rest against. be careful as a 1/16" notch translates to much more at the top of the backrest. worked great for me your results may vary.
Thanks for all the input guys. I'll try the washer thing first and if that doesn't do it I'll bend it with a press. Just kinda happy to know I'm not alone in thinking that the angle is too far forward. Don't understand why they don't allow more adjustment. Seems a simple thing to do when they engineer the damn thing.
