Ok. I know I'm going to catch some flack here. It was cool in my younger days, but I'm really tired of the noise and stuff like setting off car alarms everyday when I pull in the parking garage at work.
I currently ride an '07 FLHTCU with the 103"/255 cams-tru duals w/quiet baffles. A friend of mine has an '08 with the same setup and has tried wrapping the baffles; and after that didn't work (stuff eventually burned out and it sounded different every time I saw him), he welded a washer on one end. I really liked the way it sounded with the washer setup but, when he got it dynoed, he said he lost 23HP.
I had stock pipes when I did the 103" upgrade and the sound and power was fine for me. I went to the duals because that stock cross over pipe was cooking the biscuits. I thought I could adjust to the sound, but it's just not happening. My dyno numbers right now with the quiet baffles are 80HP & 103TQ and I wouldn't mind sacrificing a few numbers either way.
I'm sure we're a minority, but I know there's got to be a few "sound sensitive" guys out there that have found the right solution. Any suggestions (except stuff like "buy a bmw") would be greatly appreciated.
I tried many things on mine, and found that the older non-cat mufflers with the two plugs drilled out are not too loud, I welded a drill bit to some steel rod. and did it all myself. it is a little work and if I did it again I would have drilled only the plug in the engine side and tried it like that if I wanted quiet. but the power was better with both plugs drilled out. both plugs out is a bit louder than I wanted, but I was not willing to give up any more power.
You can always go for the factory exhaust. I have the rineharts and love the sound. I'm of the opinion that it helps keep me safer on the road. To each his own though.
I have a set of Vance Hines true duals on a 2009 UltraC and tried Monster Ovals and found they were way to loud. Went to Super Traps and they are perfect. Quiet when cruising yet a bark when I really get on it. Nothing will be as quite as stock so pick your poison.
