Default Replaced Rear Brakes

2007 fatboy needed rear brakes...went by the instructions and couldn't seat the inside pad .....compared old pads to new and there was a difference....extra metal on the new ones....must be wrong pads... went out to Harley, they looked at other ones and said there right....they said to remove the caliper....i did...didn't work...i ended up grinding the extra metal off the new pads to fit...must be new venders...

just a dumb question, did you happen to push the pistons back into the calipers to allow the room needed by the new pads? if not, then i can see why you had problems.

I'm having issues with pushing my pistons back in to the calipers on my '08 with ABS - I haven't cracked the master cylinder yet, but will try that tomorrow - hopefully that will make them easier to push back in.

Default replaced rear brakes

pistons were pushed in... I called someone to help me out...and hes the one that compared pads and found out that there was extra metal on the backing plate...when you would force the rear pad in, it would jam into the side of the caliper...which would keep it from sliding back and forth and you couldn't install the 2 side pins...this guy has been working on Harleys for 25 years and has never seen anything like this before...like i said we had the caliper in hand...old pads fit...new one wouldn't...i wish i had taken pic's.....you could see the difference....

How did you grind them and keep the pads parallel to the metal backing?

Bringing this old post to life as I just changed the rear on a 2007 Fatboy. The dealer sold the brake pads and when the old ones were removed there was a significant difference. Did not try to install the new pads, instead went back to dealer for the correct ones. The parts guy insisted they were the only pads, even when shown a copy of the service manual which stated there were two different pads, one for some and one for FXST, FXSTB, FXSTC and FLSTF. He could not explain. Tried to install the pads and they would not fit. Returned the next day and asked to speak with a service person, the service writer asked what the problem was and after going through the same explanation as the day before she went to see a tech. The tech came out and looked up on the computer the caliper and mount hardware, asked what the mount was shaped like, then told the service writer I needed the correct pads. Which they had in stock. After the exchange for the correct pads, the other parts guy told me the 07 Fatboy rear brake pads were on a different page then the rest of the softail pads, because they are different. 35 minutes later the pads were installed without any more issues.
Take note the correct pads are out there.

07 softails take a different pad for the rear than the front. If both sets were the same then you had the wrong rear pads. A lot of bikes take the same front and rear but your bike is an exception to that rule
