compensating sprocket from what I understand is a sort of buffer between engine and transmission.

Well, I got the bike back today. They checked the compensator and said it was OK. They replaced a bad starter and flashed the ECM with the latest upgrade. The bike starts good when hot.

I asked about the SE compensator yesterday when I brought it in but she never gave me a price and they fixed it before I got a chance to ask them again.

Thanks for the help everybody.

I noticed before they repaired the bike that when I would take off in 1st gear that if I didn't give it enough gas it would make a loud clanking noise (thought it was normal). Now that it is repaired this doesn't happen anymore. They also flashed the ECM with the latest upgrade. I'm thinking that they adjusted the compensator but I'm not really sure.

There is no adjustment on the compensator. The change in the tune can account for it no longer giving you trouble on start and low speed.
The compensator is a little spring loaded hub on the crank. It is supposed to soak up driveline shock and the uneven firing order of our engines. The factory compensator is junk, by design.

Take a look at these pics. This first one shows a breakdown of the new SE compensator. Link--- http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...ts/-J04825.pdf
Here is a photo of the SE compensator (w/stator)-

This is BDL's (Belt Drives LTD) new compensator. Much lighter and no springs.

It looks kinda odd but it probably works better than what HD came up with...LOL
Has anyone used this kind yet???
