Just had the 103 kit with 255 cams installed over the weekend and wanted to get some advise on the break in. The bike has 10K on it so I need to just break in the top end. The Mechanic said that Harleys are broken in after 7 miles. I also have been told 50 and 500. I can already tell a huge increase in power and torque but haven't gotten on it past 3500 yet. Can't wait to ride it like a raped ape!
I just did the 95 kit in my bike last weekend - I put the bike in 3rd gear and ran it from 30mph - 60mph 10 times, letting the engine/tranny slow the bike down. Now I'm going to ride it not race it and change the oil at 500 and the oil and filter at 1000 after that I'm going to consider it complete.
You will probably see a wide range of answers to your question. Good luck.
It is probably set up rich to break in and I am assuming you will get it dialed in after a 500 mi break in. TRY not to be too aggressive in the first 200 mi.

No better way to correctly seat the rings! I was a skeptic until I did it. You can actually feel the power building with each pull.
like you said, you are just seating the rings,, 100 miles should be more than enough to get um seated ... ride it like you stole it....be safe and enjoy.. its a full grown bike, dont baby it too much or the rings will never seat
I did the same build in November at the Dealer. The mechanic told me to keep it under 4000rpm and to not run it for long distances for the first 500 miles. I basically broke it in like a new engine and she runs great.
Read this and then you'll understand. I'm telling you it works!
Good article and thanx for the info. When I bought my Dodge Magnum Hemi the owners manual essentially said to run the **** out of it!!! The engine likes it!! I also made the mistake of running synthetic oil after the rebuild on my '08 Ultra because that's what I ran prior. I did the 103 build after converting it to a Trike but it still pulls better as a 103" Trike than it did as a 96" two wheeler. The 255 cams helped the low end torque tremendously!!
