I own a 04 Ultra Classic with a Stage One, and Screamin Eagle slip on mufflers. On long trips I pull a Bushtec trailer. Last year while in thre Rocky Mountains I would like to have had more horsepower. I have 25k on the bike. I would like some opinions, upgrade with Screamin Eagle or go with after market engine. My local wrench says the HD would be the cheapest but is recomending a S&S engine. In his opinion the S&S in a better engine and the 96" S&S will out preform as stock 103" HD engine. He did go on to say the 103" had a lot of potential if you spent more money upgrading. I am also considering a 6 speed tranny for times I am on the Interstate. Tell me what you have and how you like it.
Add 203 cams and the fuel tuner, and while he is in there changing cams, replace the cam tensioner shoes. It's all you need to pull your trailer through the mountains. No need to swap engines. And it's a big expense to change the 5 speed to a 6 speed gear set.
Just the 95" kit will give you a almost table flat TQ curve, that would be perfect for pulling your trailor. You can go to the harley site, look under ***. then screaming eagle if I remember right, and you can look at harley dyno charts the 95 look's good to me. Thats the one Im leaning toward, GMR make a 98" kit that get really good reviews about 91 hp and 102 to 107 TQ http://www.gmrperformance.com/
do the 95 with heads or port yours, im having heads ported now to go on my 95 if you do the kit do cams also with no waranty I would do gear drive cams should give you the best hp increse but pick a cam with low end torqe if you pull a trailer and do eny mountain trips. dont let the low end cams fool you they are quick to wind up and fun to ride but may not give you that top hp number but on the road that dosent alwayse matter do some searches on 95' stage 2 or 3 alot of good info and match youre riding style.
Is your local wrench at a dealer or is he an indy? Building a custom and uses an S&S has value. Swapping in an S&S into an HD sounds dumb. Most guys in forums won't try non HD parts, so I'm not sure how lucky you'd be selling an HD with aftermarket motor.
The guys telling you try a 95 kit sound more sensible. There was a recent thread where someone was asking about S/E heads versus boring stock heads. Good thread.
Does S&S even have a replacement for a twin cam? Everything ive seen is based on the EVO design and require a lot of work and expence to get it to work, recam and upgrade or replace with a factory 95 or even a 103.
