I have/had the grind noise for about 25000 mls. I took the starter over to a friends shop and had it all tested, changed my comp gear for other reasons and found out about the .45 deal the hard way- it can be fixed with an older style washer for an evo. I have the PN in an older post.
I chased down chaffing and had pictures up showing before and after cleaning all surfaces on starter and trans, also cleaned every electrical wire and battery terminal, even replaced the battery and still no luck. Seems like it only happens in the company of others!! I tried the immediate start button trick and it never worked for me so I am waiting for it to just not start and break. Once this happens I'll find it fo sure!
MY STARTER WAS REPLACE AT 13000 MILES.
THE SAME PROBLEM IS HAPPENING AGAIN AND IM OUT OF WARRANTY, SO I TOOK OFF THE PRIMARY COVER AND I NOTICED THE INSIDE OF THE COVER THERE IS WEAR MARKS FROM THE COMPENSATOR AND I MISSING TEETH FROM THE RING GEAR .
HAVE A LOOK AND NOTE THE BIG E MARKED ON THE INSIDE COVER WHATS UP WITH THAT?? http://s1188.photobucket.com/albums/...ide%20Classic/
