My Ultra is the first bike I've owned with vented lowers. I fully expected to want to remove them for the summer, but as of yet I'm not motivated to do so! I put locking doors on them and store my GPS in there when off the bike. They certainly help in the rain to keep your boots dry. They get pretty bug crusted quickly tho. I'm probably not going to be removing them any time soon.
I have the soft lowers and remove them only during hot days. They fold up easy and store in the bike. If it rains I can put them back on in 15 seconds. They keep a lot of the road wash off your legs and keep water from splashing up. Good investment IMO (oh btw...I didn't buy the HD kind, after market were only $50).
Funny, i wanted to post a thread like this also, very close to purchasing them on my FLHX. Wanted to see what people thought. Im not so much worried about the rain but the comfort and the affect on the bikes temperature, which seems to be nill.

i have seen many bikes with the HD soft lowers burning up near the exhaust from front cylinder.....
thanks for feedback - here is another question - if bike is dropped , meaning a off balance move at a light, - do the lowers touch the floor or crash bar protects them ?
Dropped my Ultra and no marks on the lowers. I liked the hardshell and the wind protection, but your knees will get a little wet in the rain. I hated the glove box covers though. They are just leather flaps with metal snaps which connect to plastic studs. Mine never fit right and they don't seal well so rain will get into the box. Rusted out my garage door opener that I kept in there. If you get them, look for some after market inserts or something to use the space better. Great location for speakers too.
Added vented lowers to my '09 StreetGlide. I like them alot. Eliminated buffetting, less leg fatigue on long highway trips, oil temps are the same with vents open. I usually leave them on year round, even though I ride in Texas heat.
First year with them on my SG. Love the look, reduces the buffeting but not eliminate. Its bearable now so does help. Heat will be a little stuffy driving slow in town, but out on the road nice. Don't plan on taking them off for summer. Surprised in the rain from the knees down stayed pretty dry. Knock on wood haven't dropped it yet but looks like the crash bar will take the blunt of it.
