Default Costly Job?

Hi all.

Was wondering if anyone could tell me if this sounds like a big job. My 1989 Electra Glide Classic is currently with a mechanic that does most of my work for me. At first i thought it was a simple enough matter of the clutch slipping, but have just received a phone call from the mechanic. He says the starter ring on the clutch basket is hitting off the casing, and looks like a bearing has gone somewhere in behind the clutch. My dilema is that the mechanic says that he is snowed under with work at the minute, and it would be 8 weeks minimum before he would be able to get it sorted for me, as its a pretty big job. What i want to know is, is this gonna cost me a small fortune if i take it to the dealership to get sorted? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Gee.

if the dealerships in Ireland are anything like the ones in the states it will cost a fortune, how bad do you need the bike ? I have an independant mechanic that does the work I don't want to do and the good part is he is honest and reasonable, the bad part like yours he has more work than he can handle, I would stick with your guy and see if you can get him to do it a little sooner for you, with my mechanic stopping by at closing with a case of beer always has helped

Unfortuanate thing is Tim, my man doesnt drink!! As with your guy, my mechanic is honest and reliable, and is very good at what he does. He is also very easy to pay!! Only thing is, as i say, he is really busy and i dont wanna put too much pressure on him to get the job done. I'll maybe ring the dealership in the morning and explain my problem, and try and get them to give me roughish quote for the work.

I am fortunate to have a certified Harley tech in an independant shop that charges 1/3 of what the dealer does. Likewise though, his services are high demand.

yea I'd call the dealership and ask, in the states the dealerships usually have many mechanics but they all are at different levels and can only do certain levels of work, true mechanics that can do it all you are only going to find 1, 2 max per dealership, the problem I've had at dealerships in the past is if a job only requires in their opinion a level 1 mechanic and he does the job he doesn't see other potential problems like the better mechanic does thats why these independant mechanics stay so busy, good luck

Grab the clutch hub and pull it and push it, does it move in and out?

Are you sure it is not just the starter ring gear separating from the clutch shell?

If the problem is actually a bearing failure causing the mainshaft to move back and forth, then the repair is a big job.

The gearset must be removed from the case and the shafts must be removed from the trapdoor, in order to replace the trapdoor bearings. But once you are that far into the transmission you might as well replace all the bearings, after all, the transmission is 21 years old…

Since you may have to wait 8 weeks to get you mechanic to do the repair, have you considered doing the job yourself?

Thanks for the info Dan. I just dont have the equipment at home here to take on a job of that size, nor would i feel confident to take it on myself.
Thanks again, all info is greatly appreciated. Gee.

If you havn't had sex in a while - call the dealer, lol

OK - really, I would ask your friend IF he knows of anyone else - If I were you, I would try my best to wait - or if $$$$ is no big deal - do what you have to do...

Good luck either way..
