They're made of steel, and they're much more sturdy and heavier than the flimsy stock hinges.
The parts appear to be cast which makes the statement that they are made of steel a little suspect.
Although I have them on my bike and love the way they look I would not assume for one minute that they provide any more mechanical benefit over the stock hinges. The weak point of these hinges is most likely the threads that the screws bite into. Avoid over torquing but instead use Loctite to ensure the screws do not come loose.
I had to drill anyway, the holes were too small for the hinge bolts. Just barely.
I too had to drill the holes just a leeetle bit over. My concern was that the new screws might crack the TP as they were 'threading in' rather than just going in like a screw through a hole should.
Also take care not to gouge the sealing gasket when drilling the rivets. I used a putty knife to hold the gasket away to ensure the drill bit did not damage the gasket.
