Air ride installed...
I did this same modification to my bike a long time ago. I still have the compressor on the bike but took off the air shocks after a few hundred miles. I can pump my stock shocks while riding now which I like.
The bike rode like **** IMO and if you ride half aired up you will rub your tailight harness. Ask me how I know???
Here's the way I did it.
You have another option for your...lines-compressor-valves etc etc find a good used Rancho 9000 shock kit on ebay. Everything you will need is in the kit. The lines are the same as what's on the bike. I found one for like $60
I mounted the compressor under the battery box. 2007 and newer will have to find a different location.
I then wired the compressor to my horn button and mounted the release valve under the horn cover. I don't care about a horn!
You can press out the bushings on your Harley shocks and press them in to the Monroe's.
However there is a better shock than Monroe for this mod. Gabriel makes basically the same shock but it comes in Black. I have both Monroe and Gabriel and the Gabriel is hands down better.
I don't have the Gabriel part number handy but after I was unsatisfied with the ride quality I decided to try the Monroes. They rode worse and had a shorter collapsed hieght so if you lost your air you were going to rub the wiring harness. The Gabriel's gave you a little more room when collapsed. Again ask me how I know?? lol
If you want to have some fun this is an easy mod. If you mod the bushings on the car shocks and leave your factory shocks alone switching shocks back and fourth is easy.
We take trips each year and I always put the factory shocks back on before we left. The last time I took them off I decided to leave them off.
If anyone is interested in the Gabriels I will look at my shocks and post a part number.
Here is a pic of the Gabriels....NOTE the air bag is protected unlike the Monroes
